Born in Indianapolis, Lee moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after high school. He started his college journey at age 24 at San Francisco City College and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UC Davis. Lee worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, significantly contributing to isotope hydrology and groundwater protection, and later trained international scientists in nuclear nonproliferation and emergency response.

Lee played a key role in collaborating with the Orange County Water District in Southern California, providing advice and support for their groundwater restoration and recycling program. This program is one of the largest and most acclaimed pioneering initiatives of its kind worldwide. In 2012, he launched his own groundwater consulting business to help domestic and international clients determine resilient solutions for their groundwater.

A dedicated family man, he balanced work with family life, ensuring he was present for his children and actively engaged in his community. He and his wife, Heidi, enjoyed 36 years together, filled with travel and family adventures. Lee’s legacy includes his significant professional contributions, his passion for geology, and his unwavering support for his family and community. He is survived by his wife, his children – Joshua, David, and Sarah, siblings, and many relatives.

Lee’s family, friends and colleagues are invited to contribute to the scholarship fund. Donations may be made via check, stock transfer, charitable distribution from retirement accounts and employee giving programs.
