We are proud to recognize Katherine Meezan, 2022 Pedrozzi Scholar and Kim Cupps Memorial STEM Scholarship recipient. Katherine is serving as a Kim Cupps Fellow this summer at Lawerence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). She shares:

“This summer, I am working at the Livermore Lab as the Livermore Lab Foundation’s Kim Cupps Fellow! I am working on Direct Ink Write (DIW) 3D printing as a part of the Polymer Enclave within the Materials Engineering Division (MED). My project is to develop a process to make witness coupons, which are uniform sample materials made in conjunction with each print in order to verify the machine is running as expected. This process will help ensure consistency in prints and machine calibrations as this exciting technology is further developed. DIW machines are housed in several buildings at the Livermore Lab, as well as at other national labs, and it is important that there is a way to compare how the machines are running. I have learned so much about additive manufacturing even just in the 3 weeks I’ve been at LLNL so far, both from my project and from seminars from others in the MED. LLNL’s internship program is amazing, and I’m so excited for everything I will learn in the next two months.

Being LLF’s Kim Cupps fellow is a greater honor than I ever could have imagined when I submitted my Pedrozzi Foundation application. Even though I am not working in the Computing Directorate, Kim’s story as an LGBTQ woman in STEM who contributed to groundbreaking research, and who was a leader and mentor inspires me every day. Her story makes me want to strive to be the best version of myself and to make the word a better place. Thank you so much to the friends and family of Kim Cupps, for the scholarship itself and for the incredible LLF fellowship opportunity.”
